A muon detection kit based on a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) undergraduate-level physics project. The detector consists of two units each containing a plastic scintillator which is coupled to a silicon photomultiplier for electron multiplication. Each unit has a set of electronics and is driven by a separate power supply. For muon-detection mode the two units are stacked vertically and are interconnected. One functions as the master the other as the slave in this mode. Muons are considered to have been observed if the electronic detect signals in both detectors within a narrow, preset window of time. Each detection unit is 6 cm wide and stands 5 cm in height. The units are 10 cm in length, counting the large output connector which can be used to transmit data to a computer or similar device. The count rate is displayed on a small screen at the front of the detector.
