The collection of artifacts the Society for the Preservation of Canada’s Nuclear Heritage Inc. has from the Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD) power station continues to grow. Last year Julian Bayley, who was one of the early Operators, donated a trove of artifacts including the original clock on the wall in the control room, the name and specification plates from the generator – the very first nuclear-powered electric generator in Canada, and a number of fuel channel components. Phil Simpson, who spent a large part of his career with NPD, added to the collection by donating several additional fuel channel components, manuals and a special “beverage mug” constructed in the NPD machine shop from sections of a pressure tube and fuel channel. Most recently Al Herriot visited the Society’s facility at 51 Poplar and contributed a memento given to him. It consists of an electrically-powered analogue clock mounted into an end-fitting of one of the fuel channels. It joins another end fitting donated earlier by Julian Bayley.

The Society expects to receive a number of additional components from CNL when the public comment sessions for the NPD Closure Project are completed. CNL has also given the Society access to hundreds of photographs taken during the construction, commissioning and operation of the power station. Anyone who has additional artifacts and would be willing to donate them to the Society is invited to contact Jim Ungrin at 613-584-3055 ungrinjr@gmail.com . He will be happy to pick them up.
