Part of the mission of the Society for the Preservation of Canada’s Nuclear Heritage Inc. (SPCNHI) is to collect and preserve artifacts from all aspects of Canada’s nuclear efforts. This includes the many off-shore projects in which the country has participated. Many AECL personnel have participated in both short-term and long-term attachments to projects in varied locations such as the Far East, Latin America and Europe.

To date the Society has received donations of artifacts associated with a number of off-shore projects. These include an engraved metal box presented to J.L. Gray in appreciation for Canadian effort on the KANUPP reactor in Pakistan, awards to A. Lane in appreciation of his efforts in Argentina and Korea, an engraved jade disc given to T.G. Tennant in recognition for service on the Taiwan Research Reactor and a ceramic plate commemorating the first CANDU start-up at Cernovoda in Romania. The latter item was donated by Y. Goddyn whose husband F. Goddyn spent significant time in Romania on attachment from Power Projects. The Society is indebted to O.T. Woo for translation of the Chinese characters on the Taiwan memento.

The Society also has a sample of deuteroparaffin, dated 1946 and labeled as originating from the Norsk Hydro plant in Norway famous for providing the precious supply of heavy-water whisked out of Norway and brought to Canada by L. Kowarski for some of the early experiments at the Montreal Laboratories with heavy-water.

The Society would like to hear of any other “international” artifacts including photographs and brochures. J. Ungrin (613-584-3055) ungrinjr@gmail.com or any other member of the Society executive will be very happy to pick up any donations.
