It is with deep regret and sadness that the Society announces the passing, on June 23rd 2021, of our President, Dr. Michael Stephens, following a heart attack. Michael was our founding SPCNHI president, and his substantial efforts with our nuclear heritage movement go back several years, to well before our incorporation in 2017.
He was absolutely instrumental in getting the ad hoc group off the ground, getting us incorporated, and keeping us moving forward. And that is saying nothing of his huge involvement in many aspects of Deep River (e.g., Seniors Friendship Club, Community Foundation, National Association of Federal Retirees).
Michael was a very thoughtful, engaging man, with many interests. One of those included railways and several years ago he headed a local effort attempting to save the railway connections for the Ottawa Valley. Unfortunately, his effort did not achieve its goal.
Michael’s experience with building models and Meccano served him well in the restoration of a number of artifacts the Society has received over the past several years. Recently, he put a substantial effort into the restoration of a large model of NRX and its Rod Bays that CNL/AECL loaned to the Society for display at 51 Poplar Street. It has been an honour for those of us who have worked closely with Michael on various Society projects. We shall deeply miss his leadership, dedication and work ethic, and friendship.
